Hamsphere 4 on Linux.

Just wondering if there will be a Linux version of Hamsphere 4 in the near future.

I'm wondering the exact thing, I'm using ubuntu and It would be great to use HS4 in it

I wish there were, also. I am currently using Lubuntu on a Mac Mini, and using a Windows XP wrapper (WINE) to run Hamsphere 4.0. Would be nice to run it native on Linux.

I'm using Play on Linux to run Hamsphere 4 that is untill being told to upgrade to 4.006 now im stuck. Will have to check linux forums to find an answer, till then no Hamsphere.

Update on my last post..

If you are using linux install wine and then install Play on linux (Playonlinux) its quite straight forward to install H4 on there.
What threw me was the recent update which was zip files, so i just deleted H4 and installed the update which was a .exe file.

Thanks for that info! I just installed the latest update 4.006 (WINE under Linux) and it was kinda clunky. Will have to try Playonlinux for next time!

The last information about that was (from Kelly's newsletter/mail), that a Linux-Version is under construction next time. :-)

Hi, I am a newbie in LInux, always had Windows 8 and Hamsphere 4, was working fine.
Please can you explain me how you do this in Playonlinux?
If possible, write an email to: hansstam@kpnplanet.nl

Thanks..

I opened the tar.gz file with archive manager and got a single executable called hamsphere_4.006-setup but can`t run it or open it to look inside for any help files. Running Linux Mint 17.1 and also tried Manjaro. In Wine the transceiver loads but no controls can be altered.
Re: Hamsphere 4 on Linux.

OK this is what to do with the hamsphere_4.000-setup file, and I will try to walk through my own install (only got Hamsphere today so someone might like to point out any errors)....

First, move the file to where you want it to install. For instance make a dir called hamsphere and put it in there.
in terminal, cd to the dir you placed it in... in this example cd hamsphere

First lets make sure the file is executable by typing
chmod +x hamsphere_4.006-setup

now we are going to use the bash command " . " to run it, like this
sudo ./hamsphere_4.006-setup

it will ask us for a directory where we want it to install, lets say we just give it a dir "hs4"
It will then make a directory called hs4 inside the hamsphere directory and install the program there.

Now this is where it gets a bit tasty, first cd to the dir we have installed it and if you are running a 32bit linux, or if you happen to have the 32 bit libraries for java installed you will probably be able to run it with...
sudo ./hamsphere_4.006

If you type that and it runs you are done.
If it gave you errors instead like...
Can't load library: /home/karl/HAM/SPHERE/HAMSPHERE4/rt/lib/i386/xawt/libmawt.so
at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadLibrary(Unknown Source)
at java.lang.Runtime.load0(Unknown Source)
at java.lang.System.load(Unknown Source)
at java.lang.ClassLoader$NativeLibrary.(Unknown Source)

at java.awt.Component.(Unknown Source)
at java.lang.Class.(Unknown Source)
at java.lang.Class.forName(Unknown Source)
Could not find the main class: com/hamsphere/core/HamSphere

then you most likely are going to have to install some 32 bit libraries. icedtea is open sourced java client/plugin, and so we will install that first, though it will probably install the 64bit one if you are on a 64bit system, but do it anyway because I did it and it works once the libs are installed...
sudo apt-get install icedtea-7-plugin

Now we are going to tell Network Connect that we want it to look at alternatives...
sudo ln -s /usr/bin/update-alternatives /usr/sbin/

And allow multiarch to look for the right libraries for 32bit java programs...
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt-get update

And finally retrieve the 32 bit libs...
sudo apt-get install libstdc++6:i386 lib32z1 lib32ncurses5 lib32bz2-1.0 libxext6:i386 libxrender1:i386 libxtst6:i386 libxi6:i386

When it has finished, we should be able to go back and type the original command, with a bit of luck this time it will run and not throw a wobbly...

sudo ./hamsphere_4.006

I do not think I missed anything out, but if someone got it working using my instructions please post back. With a bit of work we can turn this into an install manual/instructions.

to run the tar.gz file you right click it and select run with java or jdk (whichever one you have) it should work. I have used both Ubuntu and Mint, i use 4.0 on wine (works great) and 3.0 i run as a tar.gz.

How can I run HS as Administrator ?

Is openjava (java-1.8.0-openjdk-1.8.0.60-14) or oracle java (jre1.8.0_60) better for hamsphere 4 on linux? I personally use oracle java. I use : sudo update-alternatives --config java to select java. Then set path like in this web page: http://www.2daygeek.com/how-to-install-oracle-java-8-jdk-8u20-on-ubuntu-14-04/. What java do you use?
Re: Hamsphere 4 on Linux.

I would advise to use only the Oracle JAVA from java.com, because that is the "original" and not modified in any way.

Regarding Java version (Oracle vs. OpenJDK), I'm running HamSphere 4.009 on Xubuntu 15.04 64-bit (Ubuntu variation) with OpenJDK installed. Everything seems to work fine, although I initially had same problem with libmawt.so. I did not have to do all steps that M0UVK mentions above, but did install 2 or 3 i386 items that I had not already installed before.

I am running Linux Mint 17.1 on a loptop. I tried installing Hamsphere 4.009 using JAVA without any success.
I then tried the instructions posted by M0UVK, and it worked great. ( A big thank you). I did have to edit a couple of lines where it showed 4006, I changed to 4009.

sudo ./hamsphere_4.010_setup requests a password from (admin), password is not entered. I delete Linux ubuntu 16.0.4. go to win 10
